you’ve seen the tweets college is free
in many countries around the world same goes for Sweden where students don’t pay
a corona to attend part of the Swedes manage to provide free education for
their college students there is no such thing as a free education not in any
country we just have chosen another model to fund the education system so we
do it through public funding and through taxes in the United States we have
incredible amount of student debt is that a similar thing in in Sweden
actually yeah I think we are worse so that’s a strange
thing about Sweden we have like a very generous system for student aid but we
still have like the the highest depths in the world and most students Wow yeah
I’ve never heard about that yeah in Sweden I always heard you know a
huge amount of depths when we graduate and one of the other consequences is
that we don’t have the return on investment in Sweden is quite a little
compared to other countries and I think it’s because we have the model of the
welfare system so in some occupations you will never get the return on the
investment you do in higher education it will be negative so I’m trying to wrap
my head around this even though college is publicly funded people still need to
get grants or take out loans in order to be able to go to college yes they do so
they don’t pay any fees but they borrow money to live for during the time they
actually study on average a Swedish student spent six years for a four year
education program in Sweden I think the big difference is that
the united states have a number of really good elite colleges and some that
are probably not so good whereas in sweden most colleges and
universities are taxed financed and of similar quality so we sort of avoid the
worst but we also do not have the best so happy mediocre i think that is that
is a fair description actually

I have no problem with higher taxes for more education.
And like I said in the last video, I’m not taking that lady at her word. I want to see numbers to back her up. Also what about Swedish college students who have jobs, or still live at home, or are given some kind of allowance to live off of? Using her logic those kids would have no debt.

In the U.S. we have free public school education from 1st through 12th grade, our students are under performing and we have to look to other countries to fill our needs for STEM students at university. Free college in the U.S. will ruin our community colleges which currently provide the most cost effective way for students to get their degrees and get a head start on life. While facebook didn't intend to describe how free college in the U.S. would work, this advert is right on target. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P50BxgHLy3w

I'm from Barbados and our education system is subsided.
We spend 6.7% of our GDP on education.
We are also ranked 12th in the world in highest living standards.
And our population isn't even 300,000 people yet😔😟

I'm French and here only 2% of students in public universities take out loans, because if you're low income you get a stipend for living expenses in addition to not paying the tuition fees, which are 190€ average yearly for a bachelor's degree.
EDIT: this is NOT to say France is wonderful, and everyone should do the same. France has plenty of problems, related and unrelated to the higher education system. See the replies for some examples.

There is some key facts missing here. You don't need to take a student loan here in Sweden. You will get about $300(monthly) in student welfare, and on top of that you can choose to take a student loan if you want or need to in order to pay for your housing or whatever. It's a rather misleading video.

I am a current college student, I would never advocate for "free college", however universities are getting out of hand of how they continuously increase tuition, they're actively trying to make massive amounts of profit, higher education should not be treated with the exact mind set of a giant corporation of how to maximize profits

My kid’s high school has had a bunch of exchange students over the past couple years. These German, Italian and Spanish students were all shocked at how little is expected of American high schoolers and how poorly the kids were allowed to act toward teachers and school staff.
One of the German student laughed about the “free” college thing and said very, very few of the Americans he had met would qualify for college. The standards are steep there for the honor of a higher education and not just anyone was allowed to go on to university.

We Swedes are in a weird way proud of our mediocrity. We love to call our country the country of "lagom", "lagom" being a very subjective word for in between. Like, how do you like your steak? "Lagom". How much money do you make? "Lagom". Its a good answer to most things since the answer is very subjective, neither bad or good you can use it without hurting someones feelings when they ask you for your opinion about something (hurting someones feelings is a horrible crime in Sweden). It's almost like "lagom" is better than best, because Swedes don't want to be different. We have this socialist mindset of how everyone should be equal and even pointing out someone to be better than the norm can in certain cases be insulting I feel. This extremely important part of our culture and that is why Swedes, take Pewdiepie for example, tend to thought of as very humble especially by Americans. So personally I think it is not only bad, it is good to be humble too, but this idea of "Lagom" means that most Swedes prefer to have only mediocre Schools, instead of a mix of bad, mediocre and great schools.

It is very common in Sweden for young newly graduated highschool students that can't find a job to join a university program just to get money. Tuition is free and you get a small grant per month, around 300USD equivalent and then you are allowed to borrow around another 300USD which you later have to pay back when you start working. Its like an sms loan, super easy way to quickly get cash. Result is that tons of people start studying something they are not interested in just for the "free" money and the partying. After a year when they have failed most of their courses they are not allowed to continue the next year, they quit and are then forced to pay back money, and they still have no job, the one year in uni is worth nothing and your life of living with debt has just started. My class at Uni had 400 ppl enrolling on day one, half were gone in a year and less than 100 finished all 4 years of our program.

Much of College anymore isn't education, but indoctrination. Those with student debt (the ones that have zero intention of repaying their debt), want the American taxpayer to pay for this indoctrination. By the way, they consider any taxpayer that does not agree with them is a racist, ad infinitum. Pay for my indoctrination you racist!

1:26 In Finland, you have 30 years after finishing school to pay the debt back.
The debt is also free, you don pay interest as the interest you pay is reduced from your taxes 1:1
And on top of all, if you finish school in the planned timespan (Often longer than what the school actually takes) you get 35% payback from the government.

It all depends if you go to a college here in Sweden but let us say the parents/college is within the distance you can avoid loans altogether, but of course, as you work through your life until retirement the taxes you pay some will go to college so either way, you will pay for it one way or another. Sweden is far more capitalist then most people think.

Well, WTI started off pretending to be neutral, but with this extremely one-sided video we see the BS (sorry, Bias) rising to the top. Firstly, Swedes borrow so much because the cost of living in Sweden is very high compared to the states (not mentioned). Secondly, there is no 'Dept Crisis' in Sweden, unlike the US, because Swedes get a far longer time to pay of a dept, with payments linked to earnings (not mentioned). Thirdly, the average student debt in Sweden is comparable to the average in the US, however what is not mentioned is that some students in the US rack up over $100,000 in student dept, this does not happen in Sweden, most students stay close to the average. So, pretty much stuff and nonsense.
