Hey, Shahar here from Waves and I just recorded some vocals into a new song I’m working on. I use this SE USB 2200A microphone. It’s one of the quietest USB microphones I’ve used And the fact that is a USB microphone, means I
went directly from the microphone into my computer. No need for an I/O, although you can connect an I/O if you want one. It has an analog output as well So now that I’ve record my vocals, I’m going to show you how I mix them into the track using plugins from the Waves Gold bundle. Let me play you just a couple of bars with
no plugins at all on the vocals. Alright, so I put three plugins on the vocals themselves. I put a deesser, I put a EQ and I put a compressor. I put the deesser just to get rid of some of those sibilant Ss,
15
00:01:04,314 –>00:01:09,044
And I pulled up the male S setting put the threshold so that the DeEsser only kicks in at certain parts and it sounds like this. Now that the Ss are a little softer, I brought up some EQ And what I did with the EQ is
roll off the lows to get rid of rumble thats not necessary, and then essentially brighten it up. I brought up about 4dB at 2.5k
a little more at 5.5 and then again I shelved it at 8.5k and it sounds like this. Again without it And with it So now I know that’s going to cut through the mix a lot better The last thing I did was put a little compression. And the reason I put the compression is to lower the parts that poke out of the mix and bring up the parts that are low so
you can make out all the lyrics. I used a fast medium attack a ratio of 2,5 boosted the gain just a little bit to compensate for the compression and with the compressor it sounds like this. Here’s without it So, to me it sounds a lot better with that. Now, I want a tie a little reverb and delay to the track I use the Waves TrueVerb for my reverb, pulled up the New York plate setting, which is a subtle sort of plate with a little pre-delay, and it gives it a sense of space. It sounds like this. And the last thing, which is pretty important to me, was the delay. I used the delay to sort of give the vocals a
sense of space and make them wash a little bit, And widen them in a stereo sense by bringing up the SuperTap and a little delay on
the left, a little delay on the right, and lock those delays to the tempo of the track, which is very easy to do in SuperTap. Here’s what it sounds like with a delay. So this is what it sounds like with the plugins from the Gold Bundle and the vocals are recorded through this SE microphone. Let’s have a listen.

Nice clean sound! The only thing that would have made this vid 1 notch better would be a bit more detail on use of the plug-ins. For example, Super Tap. You say it's easy to "lock those delays to the tempo of the track". While you're there, why not show us exactly how that's done?

This is a great tutorial – may I ask, if you had a choir of voices would you do this process to each one or to a group channel after you balanced the vocals out?

@misterwillguitar With a choir if you don't want the vocalists to be distinct, rather want to glue them together, I would balance them into a subgroup and then process them together.

Yes you could apply a similar setup to rap vocals, but you may might choose to compress harder, and have less reverb/delay (or a shorter delay).

im debating on buying a waves plug in soon. Whats a good plug in bundle thats good for beginners just learning about the waves plugins? im into mixing hip hop vocals, instruments, and other effects to make my music sound clear, concise, and still have my base lines sound good.

There are several waves bundles that are designed for beginners in that they are affordable and easy to use, but essentially are handpicked plugins from waves pro line. Check out Native Power Pack for example. If you want to go deeper with learning how to use the plugins there is the Gold Certification Bundle course/book. One other option is to get an artist signature series bundle, like the Tony Maserati collection if you're doing hip hop.

I'm a rapper, and I'm trying to learn how to use plug-ins the right way. Would you say that a De-esser, compressor and an EQ would be the only plug-ins I would really need to use?? and does that fact that you're using a USB mic cause less delay to occur when recording?? becuase I'm really concered with having no delays.

Not bad. The vocals sounded over done. I think you'll get a better sound if you duplicate the vocal track, lower the level and add the effects to the duplicate. that way you still maintain a nice crisp and clear vocal with the original un-effected track, with the effect underneath and not so obvious. i think if you do it that way it will sound much better.

@kickflipindy78 Everything he did can be done with Logic plugins but if you can afford, mixing with Waves plugins will give a pro sound to your tracks. Waves EQs, compressors and above all reverbs are to me much better than plugins coming with your DAW. NPP bundle is not very expansive and you have great stuff out there.

I own a AT4050 and it doesn't give me the automatic DEPTH I need for vocals. I watched other YT vids and this mic did WONDERS!!! THANKS AGAIN DUDE!!! THUMBS ^^^

Waves makes excellent plugins. For the goofballs who lol'd "he's using logic" it really doesn't matter what software your using "pro tools whatever" it's about signal chain and plugins. The wave plugins work with most recording software. Pro tools, Sonar, Sony Acid, Vegas, Logic etc. Nice video

i still the vocals are way to high in therms of volume, i like the vocals more together with the mix(other instruments), this sounds to… triangular , i dont want to say amateur because you have a great sense of music(as i seen in other videos) but the vocals need definitely to be more integrated with the band, anyways i really like your work, liked
